Easing the Fear of the Dentist for Your Children

Does your child shake in terror at the mere mention of a dentist check-up appointment? It’s common for children of all ages to fear a dental visit.

As a parent, there are many ways to soothe the stresses and strains of that appointment and challenging to get your child to open their mouth and letting the dentist actually see the teeth.

In the first instances of taking your infant to the dentist, the main thing is to keep them calm and get them used to the surroundings of the big chair, the smell and all the instruments that are contained in that room. Keep your voice positive so your child doesn’t pick on any anxieties. If your little infant has a favourite blanket or toy then it might be helpful to take this along with you for comfort.

When you have slightly older children that need to have dentist appointments, it is necessary for you to make sure that you choose the correct child friendly dentist, one that instantly soothes your child when entering the surgery. Maybe the dentist has colourful pictures on the wall, an area in the waiting room where they can play and not think about the "visit". Always keep the situation calm and low key but at the end of the appointment, there should be praise and reward for your child. This way the experience then becomes a good one.

Even when you got teenage children there are still elements that need to be considered. Your teenager might have some fears but not feel that they can express these with you.  They may think that because they are growing up, saying that they are slight scared or anxious about the dentist, wouldn’t be "cool". Give them the opportunity to discuss any concerns that they have. If there are some maybe try and give them some relaxation techniques.

Installing the correct dental hygiene routine from a young age should help with these visits to the dentist being a formality. Correct brushing with a good toothbrush and paste will aid and lessen the chances of nightmare treatments for your children.

Importance of Dental Check-ups Through Pregnancy

When you are pregnant every aspect of your body will change in one way or the other, your dental health is something that needs to be increased.  Not every mother to be is aware that keeping your teeth in perfect condition benefits both you and your unborn child.

The tooth development of your baby will begin between weeks 6-8 so dental care and nutrition intake of the expectant mother is essential. The baby's teeth start to harden from four months.

During pregnancy, changes in estrogen and progesterone levels cause an increase level of dental health problems such as increased sensitivity and puffiness of the gums, increase in cavities, increase in plaque formation, nausea, vomiting, and food cravings.

During the first trimester you should have a check-up, this gives you time during the second trimester to carry out any procedures that may need to be done.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes is advisable.  You should use a suitable toothbrush with a pea sized amount of toothpaste that contains fluoride.  The use of an electric toothbrush makes the process effortless.

Flossing should be something in your daily routine, this stops the build-up of bacteria sitting in between your teeth and causing tooth decay.

Think about the food that you eat; you need to consume a high amount of dairy foods to provide your baby with the required calcium. If you find that you are snacking regularly then rinsing your mouth with water or a gentle brush could help.  You do not need the sugar to be sitting in your mouth and causing more cavities.

Our mouths are something that at times we abuse but when you are an expectant mother, you cannot allow this to happen, you should always remember that throughout your pregnancy you are doing everything for two and this includes your dental health as well!

Encouraging Your Children to Brush their Teeth!

The daily mission of getting your children to clean their teeth is not as simply as it sounds! As any parent will know we are constantly being given advice on the best way to handle our children's dental hygiene but the tooth fairy is never there is show us the way!

Trying to reason with a young child that brushing their teeth is important because of erosion and plaque is sometimes like talking to the wall, so you need to adapt a kid friendly way.

Always brush your teeth at the same time as your child. Children love to imitate parents so why not let them copy your stroke action when cleaning your teeth.

Select the correct tooth brush for them.  Try a bright, vibrant and fun toothbrush or alternatively a battery toothbrush might be the way forward.  This can bring the element of fun into brushing and then cut your battle in half.  Use a toothpaste that is designed for children, they taste sweeter and with the smaller children, toothpaste will be accidentally swallowed so you need to make sure the fluoride intake is minimal. The recommended brushing time is 3 minutes, you could try placing a timer or playing a song or tune for that length of time in order to encourage your child to brush.

A routine is essential for everything in your child's life and the same applies to dental health.  E.g., brush their teeth in the morning after they have eaten breakfast and ready for the day and before they go to bed, so bath, pajamas, teeth and then story time.  This will tell your child that brushing their teeth is part of their normal routine.

As and when your child wants to brush then let them do it, the more eagerness on their behalf means that you are winning that battle.

The other challenge and should never be forgotten is the sugar intake that is consumed.  A healthy diet is always important.
