Mother-to-be anxieties

From that exciting time when you realise you are expecting your precious bundle of joy comes along anxieties, this is natural.  It's natural to worry about what is best for you to eat, drink, think, feel, and do. It's also perfectly normal to worry about whether your baby is healthy, how this new person will change your life and relationships, and whether the task of parenthood is a challenge that you and your partner are ready for. But if your anxiety is becoming all-consuming and regularly interferes with your day-to-day functioning, then it’s time to find a better solution.

One of the first things is not to bottle the emotions and worries up, talk with your partner and welcome them into your concerns.  So many times mothers-to-be think they can handle things alone but in the end this causes a barrier between them and the partner and in turn this then becomes an added strain. The making of your baby was a joint decision so all things should be shared along the way.

You should remember that there are guidelines for what you should and shouldn't eat but also at the same time your body will tell you what you need.  If you are an active sportswomen then you should seek advice as to your limits but you should try and maintain a normal lifestyle as possible.  Regular exercise such as swimming and walking is recommended.

In the early weeks of the pregnancy, you could well face the battle of morning sickness; this is due to the in-balance of your hormones.  Along with the actual physical side of being sick can cause some worry.  Take advantages of any free time that you have or sick days to rest during this time. It is amazing how a morning or afternoon on the sofa relaxing can make you feel.

The listening of your baby's heart can be the most reassuring soother for any parent. For years the only time that you could hear the heartbeat was when you were with the midwife but technology has advanced in that you can now purchase home foetal heart monitors which allow you and your family to listen in at any time.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to be as calm and relaxed at possible, rest is the key as your baby will need sleep in order to grow.  This is when you have to learn that things need to slow down and not be super-mum.  Becoming a mum is lifetime job.

Encouraging Your Children to Brush their Teeth!

The daily mission of getting your children to clean their teeth is not as simply as it sounds! As any parent will know we are constantly being given advice on the best way to handle our children's dental hygiene but the tooth fairy is never there is show us the way!

Trying to reason with a young child that brushing their teeth is important because of erosion and plaque is sometimes like talking to the wall, so you need to adapt a kid friendly way.

Always brush your teeth at the same time as your child. Children love to imitate parents so why not let them copy your stroke action when cleaning your teeth.

Select the correct tooth brush for them.  Try a bright, vibrant and fun toothbrush or alternatively a battery toothbrush might be the way forward.  This can bring the element of fun into brushing and then cut your battle in half.  Use a toothpaste that is designed for children, they taste sweeter and with the smaller children, toothpaste will be accidentally swallowed so you need to make sure the fluoride intake is minimal. The recommended brushing time is 3 minutes, you could try placing a timer or playing a song or tune for that length of time in order to encourage your child to brush.

A routine is essential for everything in your child's life and the same applies to dental health.  E.g., brush their teeth in the morning after they have eaten breakfast and ready for the day and before they go to bed, so bath, pajamas, teeth and then story time.  This will tell your child that brushing their teeth is part of their normal routine.

As and when your child wants to brush then let them do it, the more eagerness on their behalf means that you are winning that battle.

The other challenge and should never be forgotten is the sugar intake that is consumed.  A healthy diet is always important.

How to Be a Well Prepared Single Parent with Children

Life throws many cards at us in our lifetime but no worse hand can be dealt then being a single parent with children. When this happens you have to look at your life and think how to effectively plan your home, money, work, routine, children and life as you possibly can.

The stressful and emotional roller-coaster that you will be on will be unpredictable and scary but at times rewarding, satisfying and providing a new chapter in your life. Your children's welfare and stability is paramount along the way.  Being the parent, you will have to deal with any emotional and stressful moment in private so as not to disrupt your children. That is why a routine is necessary.

Any contact that your children have with the other parent, should be regular and set out from the beginning, this then creates calm and stability for them and you. Remember that when your children are having time with the other parent, that then leaves you with your own free time to relax or start your new chapter, this is rewarding and adapting time. Any changes of routine around school should be approached as fun and positive.

Being the single parent will probably mean that your money will be affected either by change of work hours or relying on the other parent to pay maintenance. Budget your money daily, weekly or monthly whichever suits you best.

Your home should be equipped with all essential things i.e. food, water, warmth, security and medical box containing plasters, antiseptic wipes, bandages, lints, painkillers and temperature thermometer. You have to be prepared for any occasion in the middle of the night when you are alone thus you need to be prepared for any incident. One of the worst times is having a sick child in the middle of the night with a roaring temperature and not having painkiller or thermometer to hand.

As life is a game of cards, we all have to be prepared for the good and bad hands and sometimes take that gamble. Being a single parent is a gamble but in time the good hands will be dealt, then you and your children can play happy families.

Winter Time in Schools Not Only Brings Shorter Days but the Common Cold

This time of year not only brings shorter days of sunlight but also the common cold.  One of the worse places for the spreading of these germs is inside the classroom.  It is an uphill battle for your children to avoid the thousands of germs that are being sneezed through the classrooms. For families that have more than one child the battle becomes even harder as one sibling brings it home and then lovingly shares it with the remainder of the household.

The first symptoms of a common cold are often a tickle in the throat, a runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing. Kids with a cold may also have mild fever, cough, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and loss of appetite.  There are a few things that should be remembered. Always maintaining the diet of eating our 5 a day, this provides us all with the nutrients and vitamins that are needed to build a barrier and/or fight off those germs. During this time the drinking and intake of vitamin C should be increased. Fresh air is essential as opening the doors and windows will help to blow the germs away and not containing them inside your home.

We should also make sure that we have some medical essentials within each household.  A non-contact thermometer will always be needed, especially in the younger children in order to monitor any fever.  The use of a vapour rub or inhalation humidifier will ease the breathing, especially at night time.  Saline nasal drops which can be used to relieve congestion.

We have to remember that the cold is a viral infection and we need to let it run its course.  The key to success is getting plenty of rest, avoiding large amounts of vigorous activities and drinking lots and lots of fluids such as water, juice and decaffeinated beverages, all of these things will assist your child or children to feel better while they are on the mend.

Even though sending your children to school will not make the cold any worse, you should remember that this increases the likelihood that the cold will spread within the school.

If You Want to Protect Yourself, Use a Gel Pen

As marketing company Den of Goods often points out, gel pens have many advantages over other writing implements. Their customers obviously agree, because Bright Knight Gel Pens are enjoying record sales all over the world.

Among other advantages, gel pens make firm, deeply colored lines, the ink is fade resistant and water resistant when dry, and it is easily washed away when accidents happen. However, there is one advantage gel pens have which may appeal to those of a criminal persuasion. The fact is, gel ink is virtually untraceable forensically.

Another characteristic of gel pens is that they can help protect law abiding citizens from check, credit card or loan fraud. So how is it that the humble gel pen can be a friend to people on both sides of the law? Well, it all comes down to the science, and the particular properties of gel ink.

One common method of fraud is a practice known as Check Washing. Basically, if you have written and signed a check with a regular ball point or fountain pen, and it falls into criminal hands, the fraudster can remove the payee and amount information, leaving the signature behind. He can then make the check out to himself or a fictional company, and insert a different amount. The bank will honor the check because your signature is on it.

How is this possible? It is in fact scarily simple. The check is washed with acetone, or nail enamel remover, which is widely available from almost every pharmacy in the world. This trick can also be used on other paper work, such as loan and credit card applications. As long as a genuine signature is there, all the other information can be removed and replaced.

However, if you write and sign your checks and other financial documents using a gel pen, the pigments that are used to color the ink attach to the paper and cannot be removed without damaging the paper and raising suspicion. The simple step of changing from a ball point pen to a gel pen could protect you from identity theft and financial fraud.

If the same fraudster who stole and washed your check then fills in the payee and amount details with gel pen, he is effectively covering his traces and avoiding forensic detection. The process of thin layer chromatography (TLC) can be used to analyze regular inks, and pinpoint the manufacturer and the age of the ink. This can narrow down the field, and help to trace criminals.

With gel ink, TLC cannot be implemented, as the same pigments that adhere to the checks to prevent check washing do not dissolve. Regular inks tend to form a characteristic pattern when treated with solvents, and this pattern helps to identify the age and manufacturer of the ink. As yet, there is no reliable way to distinguish between different makes and ages of gel ink.

If people try to tell you that there is no difference between ball point pens and gel pens, tell them that there is a fundamental difference in the ink. Whether you are a law abiding citizen or a member of the criminal fraternity, you really can protect yourself with a gel pen. Bright Knight Gel Pens are manufactured to a high standard, and there is an excellent choice of colors and effects. Maybe you should try out Bright Knight Gel Pens and stay safe!
